No matter what your political stance, there’s no denying that the Presidential Inauguration took place over the weekend. So, let’s take a second to think about how the mobile technology we have available can make this event a pleasant experience for all spectators.
Most people have smart phones by now, which is something that organizers can take advantage of. Mobile apps with maps, information on how much certain areas are crowded, and even suggestions for good places to eat afterwards. The apps will also be very useful for crowd control, helping people get to where they need to be without overcrowding anywhere.
Furthermore, even for those without smart phones, SMS notifications can prove very helpful. If you need to know where to go, whether it’s to pick up tickets or find a line, notifications by text can prove invaluable. If there’s a hotline people can call with questions or concerns, that’s all the better.
Of course, with all the phones being used, network congestion can prove problematic. Telecom providers are taking steps to ensure the networks aren’t bogged down by the large amount of attendees on the phone, but even that might not be enough. When all else fails, posted signs and stations are always reliable, and the wait is only as long as the line.
Suffice to say, we can expect quite the crowd at the inauguration on Monday. Many of us will be watching from our TVs or online, but the crowd in-person is guaranteed to be huge. There were some crowding and communication issues with the 2009 one, but hopefully the organizers will put mobile technology to use to make it a smoother and less confusing experience for attendees.
