Call Centers Handling Obamacare Enrollment Winding Down

In February Obamacare enrolled around 700,000 people, bringing the total number of participants close to four million before the sign-up deadline expires on March 31. Initially the administration set a goal of seven million participants, but the rollout flop and many technical issues has made that almost impossible. With that in mind they have a new goal of six million, but even that is questionable, as Vice President Joe Biden said earlier this month it could be lower.

The healthcare initiative relied heavily on call centers to provide consumers with valuable information, and unfortunately many of the centers are shutting down or severely cutting their workforce. Jeff Harrington, writing on TampaBay.com, reported the Riverview call center will be laying off hundreds of workers as the open enrollment comes to an end for this year.

According to Harrington, there will be a layoff of 305 seasonal workers at a Riverview call center, along with 726 workers at a center in Florida's Panhandle. The layoffs will begin in early May at the Riverview and Lynn Haven sites.

Even though layoffs are always bad news, everyone involved knew the contracts were seasonal and they would eventually come to an end.

The company that contracted the call center job was General Dynamics (News - Alert) Information Technology, a division of General Dynamics, specializing in providing IT, systems engineering, professional services and simulation and training to customers in the defense, federal civilian government, health, homeland security, intelligence, state and local government and commercial sectors.

"March 31, that's the last call. If folks aren't signed up by March 31, they can't sign up again until the next open-enrollment period with the 2015 rates,” said President Obama at an Organizing for Action dinner in Washington recently. “So if they want health insurance now, they need to sign up now, and we're going to make a big push these last few weeks."

The Huffington Post (News - Alert) has reported the administration has begun an all-out push with 4,000 events until the deadline. This means they will have to sign an estimated two million new people, making it the best month ever if they achieve that lofty goal.
