Roambi Customer Survey: Big-Data Analysis Is Top Investment Priority for 2013 as Half of Key Business Data Goes to Waste

SAN DIEGO, CA, Dec 18, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Once the mainstays of business presentations, traditional pie charts and spreadsheets now elicit yawns in comparison with newly interactive graphics on iPads and iPhones, according to a customer survey by Roambi, the leading provider of mobile business apps.

Unveiled today, the survey found that 81.1 percent of respondents said interactive graphics are their most useful tool for presenting and understanding business data.

A majority of respondents (67.7 percent) ranked big data and business intelligence as technology investment priorities for 2013, followed by mobile hardware (46.9 percent) and security (35.4 percent). On average, respondents estimated they review and derive value from less than half of their company's key business data.

Additional survey findings: Business intelligence apps beat CRM -- Business intelligence apps are second only to email as the most important mobile tool, according to 43 percent of respondents.

-- CRM tools and social media were ranked third and fourth.

iPads and iPhones closing in on laptops -- 40 percent ranked the laptop as top productivity booster, but iPad and iPhone closely followed with 30 percent and 26.5 percent, respectively.

-- Desktop PCs came in fourth, followed by coffee and having a meeting cancelled unexpectedly.

Alunchtime drink less harmful than a slide presentation -- Meetings are rated most harmful to productivity, followed closely by sitting through slide and spreadsheet presentations.

-- Office chitchat, social media browsing and multitasking also rated more harmful than having one alcoholic drink at lunch.

2012 shapes up as the year of mobile work -- 40 percent of respondents estimated that more than half their business takes place outside the office thanks to laptops and mobile devices.

-- 76.6 percent expect to work remotely during the holiday season.

-- 15.7 percent present data in restaurants; 11.1 percent, in airplanes; and 6.5 percent each in bars, golf courses and other locations.
