UCLA Selects TrueVault to Secure Health Data for New Advanced Behavioral Software Platform

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/29/14 -- TrueVault, the first company to make HIPAA compliance easy for healthcare applications, announced today it has been selected by UCLA researchers to store and secure Protected Health Information (PHI) for a newly developed behavioral software platform, and ensure that this data is stored and managed in a HIPAA compliant way.

The UCLA Gambling Studies Program (UGSP) is currently building an advanced behavioral software platform to use mobile and web technologies to promote and improve mental healthcare for patients using a data-driven approach. Initially the applications built on this platform will focus on treating addictions. For example, mental healthcare providers would be able to prescribe a smartphone app developed at UCLA to help their patients with alcohol, smoking, or gambling addictions and get them information on sponsors, treatments, and techniques to deal with urges, while collecting and analyzing patient data to better understand patterns around their addiction.

To build and deliver this platform to physicians and therapists, the UGSP needed to demonstrate it could securely store and transmit patient data to mobile devices in a way that is HIPAA compliant.

UCLA adopted TrueVault's Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform to manage all of its patient data in a secure and compliant manner for this advanced behavioral software platform currently in development.

According to Ardeshir Rahman, Program Manager of the UGSP's Behavioral Technologies Lab, getting approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) was a critical first step. "The first question any regulatory body will ask is how are we securing patient data, and UCLA's IRB has very strict criteria that we must meet to show we are securing this information. The fact that they approved us working with TrueVault's platform speaks to the inherent security of their solution." Rahman estimates that working with TrueVault has already saved his research team months of critical development time. "Instead of spending time planning and building a compliant server environment, we could immediately start working on our product," said Rahman. "TrueVault's solution was fast and turnkey, and also met compliance requirements outlined by HIPAA and prescribed by our IRB. With TrueVault handling the data security, we are able to get our platform out to patients and providers much faster while having more agility, overall." "We are thrilled that UCLA has chosen TrueVault as their security provider for managing patient data in a way that meets HIPAA compliance requirements," said Jason Wang, CEO of TrueVault. "Security and compliance is a critical issue for both developers and healthcare providers everywhere. Our secure API is designed to put HIPAA compliance worries to rest so developers can continue building great products, like UCLA's advanced behavioral platform, which revolutionize the way patients can engage with physicians."
