3D printing opens new possibilities in world of fashion

Innovators in the textile and fashion industries have taken notice of 3D printing technology and are beginning to experiment with it. Accessories such as jewelry, eyewear, and footwear are popular uses so far, with some companies using the technology to offer custom-printed insoles at much lower price points than were previously possible.

Designers are also investigating different materials and methods for making 3D-printed clothing. The University of Hertfordshire in the UK has developed a line of clothing called Modeclix, made from 3D-printed textiles that are then dyed, weaved, stitched and knitted. Others have printed garments made from a cotton/polyester blend, which could have major implications for the industry.

Performance textiles spread from active wear to fashion and furnishings

Performance textiles are one of the fastest-growing sectors in the textile industry. Major textile industry players and countries such as India are increasing their focus on these materials, as they have a multitude of uses. Manufacturers have recently started using performance textiles in developing products such as breathable jackets, waterproof running shoes, and moisture-wicking base layers.

However, these are no longer the only uses for active wear. The wider fashion industry is starting to take notice, as are makers of home furnishings. Performance textiles use microencapsulation, which is a positive step towards developing intelligent fabrics, and can also be used as insect repellent and as an antimicrobial agent. There is no denying the fact that performance textiles have added a new paradigm to the textile industry and are poised to be an important part of the global textile industry.

University develops self-charging textiles

The University of Central Florida's (UCF) NanoScience Technology Center has successfully developed filaments that harvest and store solar energy and can be woven into fabric and textiles. These filaments take the form of thin, flexible, lightweight copper ribbons with a solar cell on one side and energy-storing layers on the other. They can be placed throughout jackets or other outwear to harvest and store energy to power phones, personal health sensors, and other tech gadgets.

The invention will turn jackets and other clothing into wearable, solar-powered batteries that never need to be plugged in. Especially in the case of the military, solar nanotech-powered textile is expected to play a major role in the future.
