Record-breaking Attendance at CEIC® 2015 Cybersecurity Event in Las Vegas

Guidance Software, (NASDAQ:GUID), the World Leader in Digital Investigations™, today announced highlights of the CEIC 2015 event taking place this week in Las Vegas. The annual event attracted a record-breaking number of attendees looking to gain first-hand knowledge from leading authorities in cybersecurity, e-discovery and digital investigations. In his keynote speech, cybersecurity investigative journalist Brian Krebs shared with the more than 1,600 attendees his research in uncovering hackers. Hackers are discovered because they often misstep, or make what Krebs called "Oopsec mistakes." Much like security teams in organizations that experience "opsec" mishaps that lead to security breaches, hackers make mistakes in their work that leave them exposed to detection, Krebs noted.

Key trends highlighted at the event include:

  • Lack of information security talent: According to the 2015 (ISC)² Global Information (News - Alert) Security Workforce Survey, Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert) estimates the information security workforce gap will be at 1.5 million professionals worldwide by 2020 due to an insufficient pool of qualified candidates. There are not enough candidates in the younger generations to replace incumbent security professionals, further exacerbating the problem. Universities have programs that train future cybersecurity professionals, but graduates lack the experience required by employers. The most sought after security professionals are those who have experienced a breach; companies are now poaching talent from security teams that have experienced a breach.
  • Difficulty in protecting legacy systems: Many companies are struggling to protect older computers and systems with outdated operating systems that are no longer supported, as well as machines with embedded operating systems that are not designed to be easily patched with upgraded security measures. In certain industries such as healthcare, equipment that cannot be patched can create life or death issues for the organizations responsible.
  • Shiny object syndrome in security purchases: Security chiefs are under pressure from the C-suite to purchase products that promise to solve the security gap of the day, but which are not necessarily well-suited to their environment. They often cannot be supported by the staff on-hand and do not integrate with other existing security tools. This situation causes unnecessary expenditures and ignores the real problem at hand: ensuring that the security team is covering the security basics, in lieu of chasing the latest malware trend.

"This has been a breakthrough year for CEIC. We had more attendees than ever, more world-class partners and a roster of speakers from leading companies around the globe sharing their expertise," said Michael Harris, chief marketing officer for Guidance software. "It has been an incredible experience to hear first-hand experiences from CISOs, legal professionals and high-ranking government officials. Attendees also have an opportunity to exchange ideas with thought leaders in their fields and learn first hand about how to better manage their environments and emerging trends in best practices."

Guidance Software will be returning to Las Vegas next year for CEIC® 2016. The event is expected to scale to feature more sessions, leading speakers and opportunities to network with peers. Click here for early bird pricing and more information.
